Hey there, my name’s Matthew Mendoza, most people call me doza.

I’m on a journey to maximize a career in the barber industry.

When I’m not writing or consulting, I co-own Hair Skin Club with my wife Kelly, where I continue to serve clients behind the chair.

As a writer, I cover barber industry related topics and over time have developed a unique voice as one of the few barbers who also writes.

I’ve contributed to industry publications such as BarberEVO and theTease, in addition to special features on theCut, SLCKR and Vagaro. The bulk of my writing can be found on my blog and in my weekly email newsletter called The Guideline.

After 7 years of corporate sales and go-to-market leadership experience, I officially launched advising and consulting offerings. From offering strategic advising sessions to fractional leadership roles, I still enjoy helping leaders develop and execute go-to-market strategies.

My education journey began with teaching barbers how to pass the barber exam and has evolved into business content as well.

I'm very comfortable speaking and moderating. From hosting conferences, moderating panels and producing my podcast, I love facilitating large and small discussions.

I’ve always appreciated the phrase ‘more than a barber’ because we truly are more than barbers. I hope my journey serves as a living example of that sentiment.

A Closer Look at My Journey

2005

Started cutting my brother’s hair with a pair of Con-Air clippers in our dining room when I was 14.
2010

During all 4 years of college, I cut hair in the bathroom dorms, out of my room and eventually my kitchen. The seed was planted to eventually get my barber license.
2012

My eyes were opened to the corporate side of the industry. I started working in sales at MINDBODY. For 2 years, I cold called barbershops across the country looking to connect with owners who wanted to leverage online booking and other business management tools. I realized the industry was way bigger than just cutting hair.
2014-2016

After I graduated, I worked for a non-profit organization and travelled to over 30 countries in 2 years. Inspired by the Nomad Barber, I got my haircut in as many countries as I could.
2019

Shortly after getting married, I went to barber school and became a Licensed Barber.
2020

The pandemic forced me to pivot again. With so many barber students unable to take their barber exam, I started teaching barber exam prep classes.
This led to launching the industry’s first online barber exam prep course to help struggling barbers pass their barber exam.
2021

As a new Father and uncertain future given the pandemic, I returned to sales and started working at Squire. I was the only Licensed Barber in the entire company.
I quickly became a top performer, got promoted twice and started traveling to barber expos across the country.
During this year, I also launched Big Day Barbers: on-location barber services for weddings.
2022

I was recruited by another tech company in boutique fitness to be their first SDR Manager. Over the next 3 years, I was promoted 3 times and became the Director of Sales.
During this year, I also launched my podcast Beyond Barber School and started to publish writing on my blog.
2023

Launched my weekly email newsletter called theGuideline. The barber industry’s first weekly newsletter with over 100 published newsletters.
Started consulting various barber brands across the industry from consumer products to software platforms.
2024

Became a barbershop owner when I purchased a 30 year old barbershop in Paso Robles, California.
2025

Invited to be a columnist for BarberEVO North America.
Quit my 9-5 as the Director of Sales for Mariana Tek and transitioned to consulting and cutting hair full-time.
Opened Hair Skin Club in San Luis Obispo with my wife.
2026

Focused on growing Hair Skin club, while continuing to grow as a writer and trusted industry consultant.
